When it comes to complete compliance with the regulations issued by the multiple agencies that oversee pharmaceutical waste management — including EPA, DOT, states, and DEA — pharmacy has their work cut out for them. Nonetheless, a strong effort is currently underway, as 80% of facilities predict they will achieve full compliance with most regulations within the next two years.

A majority of facilities report that they have created a list of all hazardous pharmaceutical waste in their facilities. However, not all of these facilities included off-formulary drugs ordered by their hospital in this review. Likewise, even fewer included drugs from all departments in this review, suggesting there is room for further improvement.
