Hospitals with recycling programs in place are now in the majority... However, there are still a significant number of facilities (31%) without a program. Recycling programs have been implemented relatively consistently across facilities of all sizes, with the exception of facilities with fewer than 100 beds. Most programs are run by in-house staff, and very few programs use either incentives or disincentives to encourage participation. 71% of recycling programs operate at least at break-even, with paper and cardboard the most commonly recycled items. Most of these programs (70%) are voluntary, and very few (5%) are profitable. While 50% of hospitals report having bought special equipment, such as bins, to support their programs, 93% required no additional personnel to manage their recycling efforts in the pharmacy.
