When it comes to regulatory inspections, 39% of facilities report having been recently inspected by the EPA or their state board. Of those involved with the inspections, 68% report being questioned about hazardous drug waste or RCRA compliance. While no reports of citations in the pharmacy were received, 15% of facilities received recommendations for their pharmacy. When it comes to complete compliance with the regulations issued by the multiple agencies that oversee pharmaceutical waste management — including EPA, DOT, states, and DEA — pharmacy has their work cut out for them. Nonetheless, a strong effort is currently underway, as 80% of facilities predict they will achieve full compliance with most regulations within the next two years.
A majority of facilities report that they have created a list of all hazardous pharmaceutical waste in their facilities. However, not all of these facilities included off-formulary drugs ordered by their hospital in this review. Likewise, even fewer included drugs from all departments in this review, suggesting there is room for further improvement. |
