Design Your Cleanroom (PART 1)

to Ensure Easier Use, Cleaning and Maintenance

by Kate Douglas

NUMEROUS ARTICLES HAVE BEEN WRITTEN REGARDING ENGINEERING considerations in the design and build of cleanrooms1,2. This article is writtento share some insights gained over the last 5 years through the design, build and use of several USP <797> compliant pharmacy cleanroom complexes. It will provide pointers, hopefully not elsewhere reported, which can be added to other information gained from consultation with cleanroomengineers, builders, and other experts. Pharmacy cleanroom engineers can and do provide excellent guidance to pharmacists building newcomplexes or reengineering their current operations. However, little guidance exists for pharmacists who want to incorporate the practical aspectsof cleanroom design that make using, maintaining, and cleaning a cleanroom easier. To get the best return on your investment, it is vital to build acomplex that facilitates employee training, cleaning, environmental monitoring, product handling, and physical-plant maintenance.
