USP <797> Compliance
With the updated USP <797> requirements becoming official on June 1, 2008, compliance will no longer be up for debate. Given the turmoil surrounding <797> over the past four years, the upcoming deadline prompted our desire to learn how directors of pharmacy currently view compliance, what changes they are making to achieve compliance, and how they rate the solutions they have been using. Hence, we are very pleased to bring you the results of our first annual survey on the "State of Pharmacy Compounding."

Cleanroom installation continues to be an area of growth; 60% of the cleanrooms currently in use were installed in the past five years, and most hospitals without a cleanroom are either planning to install one or are considering their options. Once the installation is complete, a cleaning protocol must be established. Hospitals report using a variety of products to clean their controlled environments.

A majority (56%) of hospitals outsource at least some of their compounding activities to third parties, and growth for these services shows no sign of stopping; 22% of hospitals indicate they will expand their use of outsourced compounding services in the future.

The activity surrounding pharmacy renovations shows no signs of abatement. While compliance with <797> is driving cleanroom renovations,many facilities are taking advantage of this opportunity to renovate other areas of the pharmacy as well.
