Specialty Pharmacy

July 2014 : Biologics - Vol. 11 No. 7 - Page #8

The escalating cost of specialty pharmaceuticals is an issue of increasing importance as pharmacy continues its endeavor to improve outcomes while controlling costs. When payors move to the practices of white bagging or brown bagging as a short-term cost-control measure, there is an inherent risk that the carefully constructed safety net underlying your facility’s medication distribution will be circumvented. For example, handling and storage become issues as there is no way to ensure temperature control throughout the new distribution process. Likewise, improper waste management is a risk if a dosage changes after delivery, but before administration. Should mishandling impact the efficacy of the drug and hence the patient’s outcome, it is difficult to identify the root cause such adverse events. Notably, facilities that accept these distribution practices remain in the minority.
