Vizient has published a white paper that can be used to improve operations and elevate the role of pharmacy. Entitled “Maximizing Pharmacy Performance: Unleashing the Power of Optimal Medication Management to Transform Care,” the paper focuses on four perspectives that improve pharmacy performance. The first is to transition to value-based purchasing with a goal of improving quality of care and stabilizing spend. Second, health systems should maximize the effectiveness of pharmacy and therapeutics committees in drug therapy management to achieve utilization-based savings. Third, health systems should understand and build on their clinical strengths to create incremental revenue. Finally, pharmacy leaders should leverage their expertise as they transition the pharmacy from a cost center to a strategic asset and revenue source.
