CSTDs for Drug Administration

April 2012 : State of Pharmacy Compounding - Vol.9 No. 4 - Page #34
Category: Closed System Drug-Transfer Devices (CSTDs)

Pharmacy’s leadership in hazardous drug management is key in affording safe practices within pharmacy, and is equally important in extending the same safety to nursing staff administering hazardous products. Despite pharmacy’s strong involvement in purchasing these devices, CSTD use during drug administration continually occurs at a lower rate than during drug preparation, with nurses at one third of facilities using these devices, while pharmacists do so at 42% of hospitals. Moving forward, more facilities are planning to incorporate these devices, but again purchases are projected to be more common in pharmacy than for nursing use.
