Outsourced Compounding

April 2013 : State of Pharmacy Compounding - Vol.10 No. 4 - Page #42
Category: Outsourced Compounding Services (503B)

This year saw a decline in the number of facilities outsourcing CSP production, and few plan to expand their outsourcing volume in the near future. Notably, facility size impacts the decision to outsource, only 49% of the smallest facilities do so versus 75% of facilities with 400+ beds. Given the serious issues surrounding outsourced compounding quality, it is very concerning that just 32% of those outsourcing have conducted a site visit and most do not know whether their outsourcer has had a state board inspection. Quality assurance reporting remains sporadic despite an increase in quality problems, underscoring the need for pharmacy directors to assertively manage their outsourced vendor relationships.
