CSTDs For Drug Administration

April 2013 : State of Pharmacy Compounding - Vol.10 No. 4 - Page #34
Category: Closed System Drug-Transfer Devices (CSTDs)

A slow but steady uptick marks CSTD adoptions among nursing staff. While 37% of all facilities are using CSTDs for drug administration (up from 32% in 2011), usage on nursing units remains behind that in pharmacy, where the adoption rate reached 45% this year. As hazardous drug experts, pharmacy continues to be very involved in purchasing these devices for nursing. Unfortunately, nursing’s current lower adoption rates are also matched by lower projected implementation rates. CSTD implementations are expected to reach 63% of all hospital pharmacies in the near future, but just 53% of all nursing units administering hazardous drugs are projected to implement the same protections.
