Medication ordering is now defined by the electronic transmission of orders, as CPOE has rapidly become the dominant practice among facilities of all sizes. Traditional methods—couriers, pneumatic tubes, and fax machines—continue to see declining usage, although some facilities rely on these approaches, as well as physician order imaging systems, to manage system downtime or to support ancillary areas, such as the ED, that have yet to adopt CPOE.
