Packaging operations are now found in 84% of facilities, and half of those without such an operation plan to implement one shortly. Despite a professed desire to eliminate the chore of in-house packaging, pharmacy remains challenged to purchase all medications from manufacturers in bar coded unit dose. Likewise, eliminating the drudgery of manual packaging is another goal that has proven difficult to accomplish. Thus, packaging operations are likely to remain an intrinsic part of pharmacy, and given that those with the most sophisticated operations (eg, 2D bar coding, unit dose dispensing rates of 100%, automated packaging, etc) are also the most satisfied, a strong argument exists for investing in quality systems.
