Items that are difficult to bar code, such as syringes and ampules, remain a challenge for pharmacy to manage. With no single, complete solution, and little improvement in the ability to purchase bar coded, unit dose products directly from the manufacturer, pharmacy is left to rely on a collection of pieced-together solutions. 

Overall, few facilities have chosen to implement a robotic compounding device, preferring instead to take a wait-and-see approach with this technology. As for the processes that are in place, overwrapping has seen the greatest decline in usage, decreasing 50% in the last three years, while flag labels remain the most commonly utilized approach.
