CSTDs for Drug Administration

April 2015 : State of Pharmacy Compounding - Vol.12 No. 4 - Page #32
Category: Closed System Drug-Transfer Devices (CSTDs)

With the release of USP’s proposed Chapter <800>, perhaps it should come as no surprise that interest in utilizing CSTDs for drug administration is on the rise. The number of facilities supplying CSTDs on the nursing units reached an all-time high of 39%, and the growth rate is projected to continue its expansion over the next few years. Nonetheless, nursing’s use of CSTDs continues to lag behind pharmacy’s use during drug preparation. It is also concerning that most facilities that do not plan to adopt CSTDs for administration of hazardous drugs have made this decision because they do not see the need to provide this protection to their nursing staff.
