There are a variety of reasons to outsource CSPs, be it to streamline workflow, reduce workload, simplify record keeping, reduce waste, meet regulatory requirements, or eliminate difficult-to-prepare preparations. With receding concerns about sterility and safety, hospital pharmacies now commonly rely on outsourced vendors to meet portions of their compounding needs. More than six out of 10 hospital pharmacies contract with outsourced vendors, relying almost exclusively on 503B-registered facilities. Despite this increased regulatory oversight, pharmacy remains responsible for maintaining proper supervision of their vendors. In addition to monitoring the outcomes of any inspections undergone by the vendor, pharmacy also must utilize clear guidelines for vendor selection and be involved in the contracting process.
