Automated Dispensing Cabinets

State of Pharmacy Automation 2019 - Vol.16 No. 8 - Page #50
Category: Automated Dispensing Cabinets

Intrinsic to most pharmacy operations, automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs) garner strong satisfaction from pharmacy directors who appreciate the combination of security, access, and inventory control this technology delivers. ADCs are consistently ranked as a top technology in pharmacy in terms of both operational reliance and user satisfaction.

ADC optimization is a common focus in pharmacy. A growing majority of facilities ensure that bar code verification occurs during every restock. Similarly, ADC monitoring software is increasingly utilized as is cabinet profiling.

Medication distribution rarely occurs in health care without the assistance of automated distribution cabinets.

Most facilities leverage their cabinets as the primary means of drug distribution; this is particularly common among community hospitals operating under a point-of-care or decentralized distribution model.

The growing trend of relying on ADCs as the primary means of medication dispensing is common across facilities of all sizes and is particularly popular in facilities with fewer than 400 beds.

BD and Omnicell lead this highly-rated market segment, followed by Cerner, ARxIUM, 3AM Technologies, and Touchpoint.

ADCs receive 96% satisfaction ratings, with one-third of users assigning the highest rating to their cabinets.

A slim majority of facilities plan to expand their cabinet capacity versus maintaining or decreasing their current capacity. Efforts at expanding capacity will be particularly common in those facilities that utilize ADCs for specific line items only.
