Wipe Analysis

March 2020 - Vol. 17 No. 3 - Page #24

USP <800> recommends routine surface sampling for hazardous drugs, which should occur every 6 months at a minimum. To create accurate data trends, more frequent wipe analysis is recommended. A variety of vendors offer commercial wipe sampling kits, simplifying the adoption process for this important practice. Investing the upfront time to incorporate wipe sampling into your SOPs and explaining the value of this practice to your staff is a prudent choice.

While just over a quarter of all facilities are conducting wipe analysis, facilities with 200+ beds have been twice as likely to take advantage of this technology versus their smaller counterparts.

HD spill simulations have yet to become a commonplace practice. However, as more facilities look to formalize their preparedness and update their spill P&Ps, wipe analysis should be considered as a component of the spill response.

As facilities look to adopt wipe analysis, ChemoGlo and BD lead the vendors currently under consideration. The Other category represents some facilities that plan to rely on their certifier to conduct wipe sampling or utilize fluoroscein dye and solution testing, rather than true wipe sampling, to monitor staff competency with HD compounding.
