Be Ready: A Vaccine Cometh

June 2020 : Refrigeration & Temperature Monitoring - Vol. 17 No. 6 - Page #1

In the current health care climate, it is nearly impossible to raise any aspect of clinical practice without including some discussion of COVID-19. And while the initial shock of the pandemic has spread and begun to dissipate outward, we are constantly reminded of the many ways in which this virus has changed the practice of medicine. That said, as it has in the past, the term vaccine has regained its recognition as among the most essential of our human accomplishments.

Regardless of the methodology by which a vaccine for COVID-19 comes about (and there are bound to be innumerable comments on and critiques of this process), we are confident one will be found, and there will be fewer commodities more precious to the global consciousness. This relative value will prove to highlight, among other things, the truly essential need for safe, effective, and multi-functioning temperature control and monitoring devices in health care.

Medical-grade refrigeration has been touted by this publication and many other hospital pharmacy practitioners and advocates for a number of years now. A device that was once considered simple and unworthy of strict clinical standards has become the opposite of that: sophisticated and essential to good patient care. While there has never been a time when proper storage and management of vaccines and other temperature-sensitive products was not important, given our collective experiences of late, the value of ensuring these products remain viable now and in the near future is particularly stark.

Fortunately, there are a number of vendors featuring a variety of configurations to best fit your operations. Implementing medical-grade refrigeration and a robust temperature monitoring system truly is more important than ever. Doing so offers the peace of mind that life-saving and life-restoring products are ready to be used as intended.

We hope the resources in this issue can help improve your control over temperature sensitive products, gain and maintain regulatory compliance, and focus the pharmacy’s considerable acumen on other essential tasks. As always, we pass along our best wishes for your continued health and safety.

Together we can,
