While 94% of facilities have committed to pharmacy grade refrigerators and freezers for pharmaceutical storage, not all areas in the hospital benefit from the safety and security of commercial grade equipment. Medications within the pharmacy are commonly stored in commercial grade units: exclusive use of commercial grade refrigeration occurs in 82% of hospital pharmacies. However, once medications are sent to the units, all too often they are then stored in household refrigerators; just 56% of facilities utilize commercial grade refrigeration exclusively on the nursing units.
