The commitment to offering outpatient pharmacy services remains strong: 49% of all facilities now provide this service to both staff and patients. This year, both the smallest and largest facilities added additional outpatient pharmacies. While automation is widespread in the outpatient setting, adoptions of additional technologies remained flat this year.

Automation is key to running an efficient outpatient pharmacy and 87% of outpatient pharmacies utilize a variety of solutions. The most popular technologies are e-prescribing, point-of-sale programs, bar code verification, and robotic dispensing.

Facility size has a clear impact on outpatient pharmacy operations: They are standard in the largest facilities, while just 3 out of every 10 of the smallest hospitals currently offer this service.


With the exception of community hospitals, offering outpatient pharmacy services is typical practice.
