HD Designated Person Role

July 2021 : HD Handling - Vol.18 No. 7 - Page #6
Category: USP Training Programs

Most facilities have assigned a Designated Person to manage all aspects of HD handling. Consider assigning this role on a system-wide basis, rather than per facility, in order to ensure consistent practices across the health system.

The task of creating and updating job descriptions is often seen as onerous, and this holds true for the Designated Person, as fewer than 30% of facilities have established a job description for this role. Progress was especially slow this year, reflecting the significant COVID-related challenges that occupied the focus of most pharmacy departments.

Consistent progress marks the development of HD handling SOPs. This year saw a particularly strong focus on SOPs for non-sterile compounding and for HD receipt and storage.
