With nearly universal adoption of ADCs, pharmacy’s focus is on maximizing the utility and safety of this technology. More facilities are profiling their cabinets and verifying their restocking processes. The number of beds assigned to each cabinet is impacted by both facility size and medication distribution method.

Most facilities assign between 11-20 beds to each ADC; this is typical practice for facilities with point-of-care and hybrid distribution methods. Those facilities using their ADCs for line items only and/or taking a centralized approach to distribution are more likely to assign up to 25 beds to each cabinet. Likewise, facilities with decentralized distribution assign the highest number of beds to each cabinet, usually up to 30 beds.

Most facilities (82%) are profiling at least three-quarters of their ADCs; however, it is notable that the number of facilities profiling all of their cabinets (16%) has remained stagnant over the last few years.

The consistent utilization of bar code verification during ADC restocking delivers a significant safety benefit. The number of facilities applying this level of safety to every cabinet restock continues to increase, albeit slowly. Currently, 77% of facilities are verifying all ADC restocks with bar code scanning.

In addition to distribution methods, facility size impacts the number of beds assigned to each ADC. Facilities with fewer than 200 beds remain within the norm of 11-20 beds per cabinet, while their larger counterparts (facilities with 200+ beds) are more likely to expand their cabinets to cover 16-25 beds.
