As shown in PP&P’s State of Pharmacy Automation (August 2013), the use of outsourced repackaging services can provide workflow flexibility and efficiency for hospital pharmacies, especially with the inconsistent availability of medications from manufacturers in bar coded unit dose. However, some facilities are considering a different approach to their outsourced repackaging services compared to last year. In 2012, 86% of facilities using a repackaging vendor planned to increase or maintain their outsourcing volume; this year that number dropped to 69%. Nevertheless, the majority of those outsourcing their unit dose medications are quite satisfied with their vendor’s performance.
